SIMON co-founder Nathan Mitchell, DVM, will speak at TEDxWarrenton on October 24, 2026. His talk covers the novel development of medical ultrasound simulators using real organs and unique technology: the work behind SIMON.
From vet school project to veterinary simulators
Nathan began building medical simulators while a student at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, working with his brother, Stephen Mitchell, and his mentor, radiologist Steven Winn, MD. Their goal was to help students learn difficult clinical skills by practicing on patient models before working with live animals. Their first creation was an ultrasound simulator, and the three went on to found SIMON Education Systems.
Today SIMON makes the Canine Abdominal Ultrasound Simulator, which plays real ultrasound videos on a dog model as the probe moves, along with equine and large animal ultrasound simulators and life-size fundic exam eye models. SIMON also hosts a free ultrasound video database and ophthalmology image database for students and doctors.
